He is especially known for his pioneering work in feedback and his experiments with the Flipped Classroom. He was previously a Principal Teaching Fellow at the University of Warwick and the University of Westminster.
In 2006 he won the ‘Excellence in Teaching and Learning’ award from the University of Westminster, followed by the Times Higher/ JISC Educational Award for Outstanding Innovation in 2007, for his website www.teachertrainingvideos.com and his work on feedback using screen capture technology. In 2010, Russell picked up the ELTON award from the British Council.
By 2010 his website was receiving more than 300.000 visits a year, making it one of the most popular EFL services on the globe. In 2015 Russell was listed as one of the top 23 most influential Educational Technologists in Twitter and also listed on the MIMIO blog as one of the top 20 Educational Technologists
